A betrayal

Last week, House Republicans voted to pass the single largest cut to Medicaid and food assistance in our nation’s history while gutting the clean energy economy just as it’s gaining momentum. And all while giving tax breaks to billionaires.
This is a betrayal. It is a betrayal of working families, who are already struggling to get by. It is a betrayal of the millions of people who will lose their health care. It is a betrayal of working families who will lose the food assistance they rely on to keep food on the table. It is a betrayal of our children, who will bear the brunt of inaction on the climate crisis already ravaging our country.
Every single House Democrat voted NO on this Big Ugly Betrayal Bill. And we fought back. House Democrats introduced over 500 amendments aimed at protecting Medicaid, food assistance, and clean energy incentives, just to name a few. When House Republicans blocked each amendment—and tried to hold the vote on the bill in the dead of night—Leader Jeffries held the House floor for over 8 hours, preventing Republicans from passing the bill while the country slept.
While this bill is a betrayal, my response is a promise. A promise to keep fighting for a world where we do more than get by, but thrive. This fight won’t just happen in the halls of Congress. It will happen in communities, around our kitchen tables, and with neighbors.
That’s why I need to hear from you directly. Your voice fuels my work.
My next town hall is on Saturday, July 19th, at 11 am in the Franklin High School Gym in Portland. I hope to see you there. We will get through this, together.
Be well,

Maxine Dexter, M.D.
Member of Congress
