Protecting those who protect us

December 4, 2025
Blog Post

As a physician, I’ve seen what wildfire smoke and toxic air do to our health. I’ve treated adults with asthma, seniors with COPD, and firefighters whose lungs were permanently scarred just for doing their jobs.

Clean air is fundamental to our health. But every year, wildfire season gets longer, the smoke gets thicker, and the stakes get higher. In September, I convened a group of wildland firefighters to hear directly about the conditions they face on the front lines. What I heard was deeply troubling: the federal government is failing to provide the respiratory protections these heroes need to do their jobs.

That’s why this week, I announced that I’m drafting comprehensive legislation to ensure wildland firefighters receive the care, protections, and long-overdue support they deserve. It’s time to protect those who protect us.
