Dexter: “It is despicable”

July 3, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03) released the following statement after voting against the House passage of Donald Trump’s Big Ugly Betrayal Bill.

“I grew up in a working-class family living paycheck to paycheck. I know what this bill, in all its cruelty, will do to working families in Oregon. People will be forced to choose between buying groceries or filling a prescription, between paying rent or a copay, between keeping the lights on or getting preventive care. All of this pain for what? To give billionaires more tax breaks. There’s nothing beautiful about this. It is despicable,” Dexter said.

“While this bill is a betrayal, my response is a promise—a promise to keep fighting for a future rooted in justice, compassion, and possibility.”

The legislation will rip away health care from as many as 17 million Americans, including for nearly 200,000 in Oregon. It enacts the largest-ever cut to federal food assistance, resulting in at least 62,000 Oregonians being at risk of going hungry. It guts clean energy investments, leading to an estimated 8,300 clean energy jobs lost in Oregon. And it does so while adding $4.5 trillion to our national deficit.
