Pro-Choice Physician Slams GOP’s “Health Care Surveillance Act”

January 23, 2025

“It is a disgusting fear tactic.”

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03) spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives against H.R. 21, an extreme bill to criminalize doctors for providing lifesaving health care. An excerpt of her comments below, edited for clarity:

“Killing infants after birth is murder. It is illegal everywhere in this country. This bill is a thinly veiled attempt to make health care providers fear that they will be criminally prosecuted or sued for giving lifesaving, legal health care.”

“This bill does nothing to save babies or protect mothers. Instead, it will exacerbate the already dire shortage of women’s health care providers across this nation. Make no mistake: women will be harmed by this bill.

“No doctor should have to choose between administering the treatment their patient needs or going to jail. And no politician should be making decisions about any patient’s reproductive care.”
