Republicans Try to Jam Medicaid Cuts in the Dead of Night, Dexter Using Every Legislative Maneuver Available to Fight Back

May 20, 2025

“Republicans are trying to ram through their tax scam while the country sleeps—hoping no one will notice.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03) is set to introduce amendments to block attacks on Medicaid, free speech, and public lands during the 1:00am House Rules Committee Hearing on the Republican budget. The House Rules Committee is tasked with determining when and how bills advance to the full House for a vote. Dexter is joining Democrats in using every legislative maneuver to prevent this bill from coming to a vote.

“Republicans are trying to ram through their tax scam while the country sleeps—hoping no one will notice. But Democrats most certainly did—we are fighting back with everything we’ve got,” said Rep. Dexter. “I didn’t come to Congress to take up space. I won’t stand by while Republicans hand out tax breaks to billionaires and slash Medicaid and food assistance in the same breath.”

Dexter’s amendments would require Republicans to face the consequences of their Medicaid cuts, strike an egregious provision that charges citizens for protesting new oil and gas leases, and fund critical oversight activities to rout out Republican corruption under the bill.
