WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03) announced that a lawyer for Jackie Merlos, a Portland mother held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention without cause, has filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus.

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03) released the following statement after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted the federal government’s motion to stay the first Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) blocking the president’s order to deploy federalized Oregon National Guard troops to Portland:
“Portland is a peaceful, kind, and loving place. Today’s ruling, if allowed to stand, does not change that.
PORTLAND, OR— Today, Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03) announced that the removal proceedings for Jackie Merlos were terminated by an immigration judge. The ruling is the result of immense public pressure and advocacy led by Dexter and an acknowledgment by the judge that there is no legal basis for ICE to detain or deport Jackie, who has a valid visa application pending.
